this cover was designed in response to an editorial book cover design contest held by yes i'm a designer community (www.yesimadesigner.com) for dr. sarah bennett’s upcoming pregnancy guide, nine months together.
the brief called for an authoritative yet reassuring cover that bridges medical expertise with modern parenting lifestyle. instead of adopting a cold, overly clinical aesthetic, we built a visual narrative centered on warmth, intimacy, and structural balance.
human at first glance, structured at the second.
the oversized numeral "9" anchors the composition, framing the maternal silhouette while setting a strong graphic tone. hand-lettered titles and tactile accents—like a hand-drawn yellow crayon heart—soften the geometry, giving the layout an expressive, diary-like intimacy that connects emotionally with first-time parents.
from a distance it reads as a warm, serene lifestyle publication. up close, the deliberate layout logic reveals itself: a grounded slate blue establishing clinical authority, punctuated by an electric yellow that brings energy and optimism to key focal points.
the typography lives inside the visual space rather than sitting on top of it. condensed metadata elements sink into the background shadows, allowing the expressive headline scripts to float naturally around the figure. text and imagery share the same physical depth, giving a flat page its tactile dimension.
two main accent colours only—slate blue and electric yellow—calibrated to complement the warm neutral tone of the photograph.
nothing competes with the emotion of the moment.
